Speaking on CNBC on Thursday to discuss his new shoe deal with China’s Li-Ning, Warriors a star Stephen Curry reaffirmed his commitment to Golden State and does not want to finish his NBA career anywhere else.
“Not at all” Curry responded when asked if he liked the idea of free will (Link to video on Twitter). “I’ve always said I want to be a Golden State lifer. What we’ve built there, the fact that I can lead it this year with draymond (green) and a coach (Steve) Kerr. Everything about contracts is what happens with the NBA from year to year, it’s so crazy that things change so quickly. But I know my interest and mission to stay in Golden State and be competitive is there, and the contract stuff will take care of itself.”
Curry became eligible on Aug. 29 to sign an extension that could be worth up to $136.7 million over two years. Reports indicate the Warriors are willing to give the two-time MVP just about any one- or two-year contract he wants to sign. He will make approximately $62.6 million in 2026/27, the final year of his current deal.
During Thursday’s NBA Today segment, ESPN’s Anthony Slater (Link to video on Twitter) suggested there would be a decision by the start of training camp. That could mean Curry will agree to a new deal by then, though it could also mean he and the Warriors decide to hold off for a few months to give both sides more flexibility ahead of the 2027 offseason, in which Golden State plans to have significant cap space.
“My guess is that at some point in the next week and a half, Steph Curry will come to some clarity as to whether he wants to extend now or wait.” Slater said.

- Slater also discussed Jimmy ButlerACL recovery process during his appearance on NBA Today, suggesting he continues to hear “good news” about Butler’s progress, though the veteran forward is expected to be limited to individual work when camp opens. According to Slater, Butler continues to be one of the team’s leaders while he’s sidelined, and says the 37-year-old will host a player-only pre-camp event next week in Southern California.
- Recently hired assistant head coach Frank Vogeladdition of which to Steve Kerremployees of Art officially announced on Thursday talked to Luca Evans of The San Francisco Chronicle on why he was excited to join the Warriors and why he feels his best years as a head coach are yet to come. “I don’t know how much I want to say it publicly, but I’m very confident about what lies ahead when the time comes.” Vogel said. “But … it’s when it happens. I’m not chasing it. I’m excited to be in this role, on this team, supporting Steve and helping Steph and Draymond get another shot at a ring.”
- Vogel also spoke specifically about several Warriors players, including Brandin underground, Kristaps Porzingisand Yaksel Landeborgand cited Greene’s presence as a factor in helping convince him to take the job. “You want your defense to have teeth, you know what I mean?” Vogel told Evans. “And (Green) scared the hell out of me every time I played against the Warriors. I know if he’s going to play, it’s going to be a tough game to win and it’s going to be tough to score.”
