Mixed martial artists have suffered serious injuries over the years, but it’s rare for a fighter to be hurt by a referee’s actions.
Unfortunately for one unfortunate fighter, that’s exactly what happened at the Top FC 24 event in Seoul, South Korea on Friday. The incident occurred during a match between inexperienced lightweights Kim Ji Yeong and Kim Jun Woo. Neither fighter had a long resume this week, so this was their chance to step up and prove they have what it takes to succeed in MMA.
Entering the cage with a 0-1 record, Yeong made it through the second round with an incredible finish. He brought a crisp left arm up the side of the cage clamped body and folded Woo where he stood. Woo quickly covered up and was unable to continue, prompting the referee to react quickly and call off the knockout. Here things took a turn for the worse.
When the referee called a stoppage, Yeong’s leg got stuck under him and Yeong appeared to give out his knee completely. Yeong screamed in pain and was clearly shocked by what had just happened, despite earning a huge victory in front of the home crowd. The referee checked on Yeong moments later, but it was still a horrific accident that left the victorious fighter badly injured.
Check it out below and let us know if the referee should be blamed for this freak accident!
