September 7: UEFA will hold tributes to the victims of the devastating floods in Nepal before each Champions League match this week.
Players and referees will observe a moment of silence before kick-off, while a banner reading ‘Nepal is not alone’ will be displayed in stadiums throughout the competition.
The gesture follows the floods that hit Nepal on August 26, leaving communities across the country to deal with the aftermath of the disaster. 1,311 deaths have now been confirmed, with more than 5,000 people still missing.
Nepalese held a national day of mourning for the victims of the flash flood on Monday, lighting candles to mark the last day of the traditional 13-day Hindu mourning period.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said: “The entire European football family will come together before this week’s matches to express our deepest condolences and support to the people of Nepal. We wish them strength and resilience as they continue to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath.”
