Double Olympic medalist Charity Williams will make her rugby debut Scotland in Canada WXV Global Series opener in Edinburgh.

The 29-year-old has competed in rugby sevens at three Olympics, winning a bronze medal in 2016 and silver in Paris two years ago.

It is joined by electricity Canada The team includes women’s sevens teammate Savannah Bauder. Williams starts on the left wing in a back three that also includes Fancy Bermudez and Claire Gallagher.

There is also a potential debut for loosehead prop Sophie McDonald, who is restricted to age level. She was named among the replacements alongside Bauder.

“It’s always exciting to see players earn their first cap for Canada,” said Rouet. “Myself, the players and the staff are very excited to see what these three can do on the field. Charity has obviously had a very successful sevens career, Savannah is just starting hers but has been great and Sophie has played well during the QORC (Quebec Ontario Rugby Championship). They will all bring their flair to the game on Saturday.”

Sophie de Goede does not start at the Hive Stadium after a previous commitment to her masters degree meant the World Rugby Under-15s player of the year missed several days of training. The 27-year-old takes a place among the substitutes, with Alexandra Tessier captaining the team from inside centre.

“We had a good week of preparation Ireland last week which has carried over as we prepare for Scotland on Saturday,” Rouet said. “As I mentioned earlier, these games are very important for us to give the younger players experience at international level while ensuring we field a team that gives us the best chance of winning. This is the first WXV match for both teams, it should be a great game.”
