Noah Caluori proved he is in exciting form and ready to help lead England’s attack in the upcoming Nations Championship games with an inspiring display in Saracens’ 39-31 win over Newcastle.
The electric youngster came on after the break to lift what had been a lackluster and poor home performance, chasing a score as Sarries ran in five second-half tries to finally overcome the visitors who threatened to upset them.
Caluori, 21, who made his own England debut against Fiji in the summer, is the most exciting winger prospect in Prem and he showed why with his pace and power.
But Sarries certainly needed his spark and energy as they trailed 17-7 at the break with Red Bulls on top and looking dangerous despite giving up nine penalties in the first half.
Saracens were guilty of a series of mishandling and poor execution as Newcastle he deflected a shot from lost striker Elliot Millar Mills into injury to take the lead.
After full-back Josh Hodge’s early penalty, Sarries had to replace Theo Dunn with Jamie George after the former failed to assess a head injury.
South African Werner Kok showed his power to run under the posts for the first try as Sarries hit back to see George rise to take the try. Kok became the provider for number eight Sam Graham as he raced down the wing, switched to utility forward to complete the move.
The Red Bulls lost the dangerous and influential Koko to a head injury after the collision, and he too failed to return in the second half. Newcastle then exploded due to poor discipline.
Graham was booked for a poor tackle in the game with Sarries capitalizing and center Sione Va’enuku bulldozing his way over for the try.
They were reduced to 13 men when Alex Hearle was also booked for a tackle and were throwing away any chance of a first win at the StoneX Stadium.
Led by the loud Owen Farrell, Sarries capitalized with Toby Knight reaching for another try.
Farrell’s conversion put them in front for the first time before they surged ahead thanks to center Nick Tompkins and then Caluori as the youngster raced down the right to touch down with one hand.
His appearance gave his side a real boost and showed why he could be such a dangerous and important weapon in England’s back line as the Allianz Stadium is set to host New Zealand and Australia, with Japan in between.
A flurry of late tries saw Sarries wrap up their third win in five Prem games and bounce back from defeat by Harlequins. Elliot Daly broke into the left corner and was followed by winger Rotimi Segun.
The Red Bulls grabbed the forfeit bonus point along with their try bonus with Ollie Leatherbarrow and Hearle finishing moves as the visitors humbly refused to go down.
