This versatile apparel made packing for my golf trip a breeze

Readers of this space may remember that I am a firm proponent of carry-on luggage. I have come to believe, no matter the length of your trip, if it involves air travel, traveling with a transport is a non-negotiable. I managed to do it on an international trip of two weeks for the last two years, which helped me feel the power to limit myself to one transport for every subsequent trip since then, regardless of the destination.

That is, until I had a golf trip on the horizon. Uh oh. The trip was only three days long, but the variety of clothing needed—travel clothes, on-course and off-course options, post-golf clothes, and lots of shoes, of course—had me doubting myself. How could a carry-on bag provide all the packing space I needed? The solution was obvious: I needed to wear clothes that worked as well on the course as they did. But this strategy has brought another problem to the surface: A multifunctional golf outfit that works well on the course and looks appropriate off it is notoriously hard to find — especially for women.

I am happy to report, however, that these pieces of unicorn clothing do, in fact, exist! I was pleased to discover that TravisMathew’s Women’s Collection checked every box. Using these pieces on my trip allowed me to feel good for all three days – and pack everything in one piece of luggage.

What I liked about TravisMathew’s women’s gear

One thing I’ve noticed about women’s clothing in recent years is that golf gear tends to look exactly like that: golf gear. My closet is full of those staples, but it’s not an outfit I’d usually consider wearing to dinner or drinks — especially on vacation.

I brought a total of four TravisMathew suits on my trip: three to wear on the course, and one that I own. could play, but instead planned to change in after a round. The others were crossovers that can be worn all day. The refreshing thing about the TravisMathew pieces I wear is that they embody the athletic yet weighty athleisure vibe I like to have on the course, while maintaining flattering silhouettes and enough lift for off-course wear.

Take, for example, the Moveknit Zip 2.0 sleeveless dress. I’ve sung the praises of this dress before, but man! I want to shout it even louder from the rooftops. It’s so nice, so comfortable, and looks perfect for the course. It has a neck and is a long length – that is, not too short. Is it absolutely a candidate for use on the 19th hole and with an assortment of colors and patterns available, you will be hard pressed to identify this dress as a golf dress. It’s a 10/10, no notes.

And TravisMathew’s other separates impressed me as well. The skorts are stretchy, soft and comfortable. The tops are also, and the fabric used on both pieces is thick enough to have a smooth effect in the midsection, rather than sticking to the areas that you prefer to stay closed.

The weather was hot on my trip, so the only layer I brought with me was light as air Skyloft Light Quarter Zip. The sleeves were tucked in when I scrunched it up, and I wore the top all morning in a humid 85 degree morning so it didn’t feel uncomfortably cloying. What a victory!

An article that surprised me: the MoveKnit Rib Zip Sleeveless Polo. I saw this piece several times while shopping, and the cut length immediately spoke to me (the word was NO). I am a middle-aged mother, and I have no interest in wearing a “crop”. BUT… when this polo is paired with the drawstring belt Opening skort Shotwhich is a tall size, the dress is really… perfect! The top doesn’t run, and the skirt stays put, so the result is a beautiful dress that feels youthful without unnecessary exposure. It works exactly as it’s supposed to and is ideal for a casual holiday night out on the town.

Ultimately, I was excited to identify TravisMathew as a new brand for apparel that works as hard on the course as it does off. New styles are added all the time, and there’s a whole collection of cozy loungewear that I’m eager to dive into.
