The victory was Gauff’s 11th in a row and 46th of the season, and it takes him to his seventh Grand Slam semifinal. Among active players, only Venus Williams (12) and Serena Williams (10) have accomplished more by age 23. She is 6-0 against Andreeva and has yet to lose to a younger opponent in a Grand Slam match, a record that now stands at 7 after defeating Iva Jovic in the previous round.
For the first time since Wimbledon in 2009, the women’s semifinals at a Grand Slam tournament have been drawn in the top four events. Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff are Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4; Seventeen years ago it was Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Elena Dementieva.
Not a clear evening
It was not a clean night for both of them. Gauff committed 12 double faults and won 38% of her second-serve points, and both players committed exactly 42 unforced errors. They were separated by the forecourt. Gauff came in 28 times and won 19 of those points, while Andreeva won six of her 17 approaches.
Andreeva saw it coming, saying Monday that she had watched Gauff drive to the net and play more aggressively earlier in the tournament.
Andreeva, the reigning Roland Garros champion, was in her first US Open quarterfinal and her first on hard court. She defeated Indonesia’s Janice Tien 6-2, 6-2, Germany’s Eva Lis 6-0, 6-2, Czech Nikola Bartunkova 6-2, 7-6 (5) and Austria’s 24th seed Anastasia Potapova 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. All four of his career losses at this tournament have now come against the Americans.
Gauff was beaten by Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-4, Spain’s Cristina Bucha 6-3, 6-4, Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-4, 7-6 (5) and American 14th seed Jovic 6-1, 6-4.
