Fernandez will next play Russian Mirra Andreeva, the top seed, whom she defeated 6-1, 6-4 in Toronto a few weeks ago. He downplayed that result.
Parks, ranked 70th, was again playing with heavy ligaments on his right shoulder and his serve never settled down. She hit 45 percent of her first serves in the match, 36 percent in the first set and 50 percent in the second, and committed nine double faults.
The 31st-ranked Fernandez led 5-1 in the opening set before Parks fought back 5-4. The Canadian then took the set on her first set point. In the second set, he broke 1-2 early, broke back straight, took a 4-2 lead and closed it out 6-3.
“Overall, I’d say my game was pretty solid,” Fernandez said. “The most important thing was my mental strength. It was definitely tighter today than the day before. Alicia is a tough competitor and didn’t give me much of a rhythm. So it was extremely important for me to just stay in my bubble, execute my game plan, execute my game. I’m glad I was able to do it.”
He credited the crowd for helping him in the latter stages.
“It definitely helped me a lot, they gave me energy and motivation in these late and difficult matches,” he said. “It just gave me a sense of calm and also strength in certain moments.”
In the previous round, Fernandez defeated Kyoka Okamura from Japan with a score of 6-2, 6-3. Parks defeated Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi 6-4, 6-3.
“I mean, of course, I want to say that I’m going to use our game in Toronto for confidence, but, you know, it’s another match, another day, another tournament…” he said of Andreeva. “It will be difficult. He’s not going to give it to me easily, so I’m just going to try to focus on one point, one ball and execute the game plan.”
