Spanish Daniel Merida defeated the Argentine lucky loser Sebastian Baez 6-4, 6-2 in the first round Paris Masters 1000 on Monday in his debut event. Baez replaced Belgium’s Alexandre Blox, who withdrew with an ankle injury. It was their first meeting.
Merida, 22 and the 42nd seed, won his first ATP title this season in Umag. He also arrived Bucharest finalwhere Mariano Navone beat him 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. In the second round, he will face 12th seed Tommy Paul or Holger Rohn, who play on Tuesday.
