Team USA bounces back from rough outing by dominating Czechia

After an incredible win over Italy, Team USA responded convincingly in the final game of the group stage a day later, defeating the Czech Republic 105-64. With Monday’s win in Berlin, the Americans took first place in Group D, allowing them to bypass qualification for the quarterfinals. They await the winner of Hungary against Japan in the round of 16 on Thursday.

Team USA’s offense was much cleaner than in the 55-52 win against Italy. The four-time defending World Cup champions topped their week total with 57 points in the first half against the Czech Republic, and finished the game with 52 percent shooting from the field. Against a Czech defense that suffocated the paint and sputtered the zone defense at times, the 3-ball opened things up for the Americans. Breanna Stewart hit her first 3-pointer in the first minute, and Team USA had seven days.

Stewart set the tone in many ways in the first quarter. She rebounded from a rough shoot in the second group stage, hitting 8 of 11 field goals and 19 points. She also posted six assists with zero turnovers and led the Americans’ transition attack with her rim-running.

Rhyne Howard’s defense was critical for Team USA who created separation early. The WNBA’s steals leader had five steals, which allowed the Americans to get into the open floor. Howard’s extensive international experience came in the 3×3, but she fit more naturally in the five-on-five, acting as a combination forward with the necessary size and spacing.

The Czech Republic never really threatened after halftime, allowing coach Kari Lawson to play the reserves for most of the final 20 minutes. Every member of Team USA scored a goal while playing at least 10 minutes.
