September 9: Manchester United have confirmed SumUp as their new sleeve partner, featuring the fintech company’s logo on the men’s, women’s and academy shirts across all competitions, as well as branding at Old Trafford and the women’s Progress with Unity Stadium.
The men’s team will wear the patch for the first time in their return to the Champions League against Sabah on Thursday.
SumUp replaces DXC Technology, whose four-season deal ended in August, leaving United to wear Premier League patches for their opening games while the slot was empty, as required by league rules.
The value of the sponsorship is understood to be in excess of £20m a year.
Marc Armstrong, United’s chief business officer, welcomed the link. “SumUp is a fast-growing global business and we are delighted to welcome Manchester United as an official sleeve partner,” he said, adding that it “reflects Manchester United’s continued appeal as a platform for ambitious brands looking to connect with audiences around the world.”
Last month SumUp agreed a training team sponsorship with Premier League rivals Manchester United.
SumUp’s Commercial Director Luke Griffiths pitched it around the fan experience. “Football is about the moments people share – watching the game with friends, traveling to see the team, wearing the shirt with pride and celebrating together, wherever you are,” he said, looking forward to reaching United fans “in these moments”.
