21 October: The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has issued an invitation to tender (ITT) for UK live broadcast rights for William Hill Premiership matches from the 2029/30 to 2032/33 season.
The SPFL’s current deal with Sky Sports allows the broadcaster to show up to 60 Premiership games per season, with Premier Sports also showing up to 22 games. The SPFL’s national broadcasting rights are worth around £33.2m a year.
The SPFL said it “is flexible about the number of matches it shows live in the future and the ITT invites bidders to discuss their preferences with the league”.
Sky and Premier Sports’ current deals run for four years from 2024/25 to the 2028/29 season. Premier Sports has a separate contract for Premier Sports Cup broadcast and sponsorship rights, which will remain in place until at least the end of the 2030/31 season.
Neil Doncaster, SPFL Group Chief Executive, said: “Achieving strong broadcasting partnerships is an essential element in maintaining a balanced and sustainable revenue mix for the SPFL and its clubs.
“We anticipate strong interest from broadcasters in what is widely recognized as one of the most exciting domestic league competitions in Europe.”
The SPFL recorded their highest annual attendances in their history last season, following one of the most exciting top-flight campaigns which came down to the last game of the season which saw Celtic claim the title.
