Denis Shapovalov finished his first round match against Karen Khachanov in Rolex Paris Masters on Monday night despite leading 4-1 in the third set. The Canadian lost the first set 4-6, and won the second set in a tie-break.
At 3-1, 40-30, Shapovalov stopped the game clutching his right thigh and called a medical timeout. A tear was feared, but it was more like a convulsion. The truth is probably somewhere between the two. He resumed six minutes later, limping off, and held serve for 4-1 before retiring in the next game after marking from his own box.
In the opening match of the night session, Khachanov advances to the second round, where he will face either 13th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or French sensation Moise Kouame, who meet on Tuesday.
