Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to miss some time with the hip injury he suffered in his season opener, but his absence is likely to be short.
Darnold was hurt on Seattle’s first drive Victory 13-10 about him New England Patriots. He didn’t return to the game, but the Seahawks still managed a narrow victory in last season’s Super Bowl rematch.
The 29-year-old underwent an MRI on Friday, and while that is still being reviewed by team doctors, a team source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Darnold had “dodged a bullet.”
NFL Network and ESPN’s Ian Rapoport added that Darnold is expected to miss next week’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, but will be back “sooner rather than later.”
The block threw for 187 yards and a touchdown in relief of Darnold, the ability of Seattle’s linebacker to protect the football proved decisive as the Seahawks defense forced counterpart Drake Maye into a mistake-filled display.
Maye was intercepted three times, his third coming with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter as he was stripped in the end zone on an ill-advised third-down throw with the Patriots in position to kick a field goal and tie the game. Instead of a punt to force overtime, Maye’s interception of Josh Jobe allowed Lock to run out the clock and seal the victory for Seattle.
