Last night (September 12, 2026) Ryan Garcia secured the first defense of his WBC lightweight title with a demolition Conor Benn just in the second round of their main event boxing match. The fight took place inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and was televised live Paramount+ one of the biggest boxing events of the year.
It’s all part of the takeover of Zuffa Boxing, their first “Super Fight” card online. A year or two ago, this would have been a pay-per-view (PPV) event hosted by the likes of Eddie Hearn and Oscar de la Hoya.
The actual fight was not competitive. Benn forced action from the first bell, relentlessly chasing the vaunted power hitter. Commentators mentioned the fact that elite boxers don’t start fights this way without directly stating the obvious meaning of the statement. In the first 30 seconds alone, Garcia’s left hook — a famous shot he relies on far too often — bounced off his opponent’s face at least twice.
Even as the left hook hit his gloves, Benn stepped into it, creating a sonic boom that could be felt through the TV screen.
Benn playfully tried to push through Garcia’s lead hand and inside the box. But for all his aggression, he hit one shot that caught Garcia’s attention? “King Ry” choked or blocked most of his swings with no problem. Meanwhile, he also started the Benn era with a top-up. Then, when Benn finally weaved under a left hook, Garcia took him right into a sweet right hand.
Although the official stoppage came a few more swings later, that right hand functionally ended the fight. It lasted just four and a half minutes. Considering Benn’s $15 million debut contract and subsequent extension (expected to be worth many more millions), it was a very expensive 265 seconds for Zuffa Boxing.
Despite the investment in Benn, Ryan Garcia leaves as a star, a champion and a world-class free agent. It was reportedly the last bout of his Golden Boy contract, meaning Zuffa Boxing will have to pay up if they want Garcia to return to Paramount+. Perhaps this was the long-term plan regardless – Garcia still entered the fight as a significant favorite – but is it good business for a high-paid star in an up-and-coming promotion to get out of class?
