Medvedev, fifth semifinal in five weeks
The win was Medvedev’s 100th quarterfinal appearance and sent him to his fifth semifinal in as many weeks. On Thursday, Medvedev saved a point in the match with Cameron Norrie in the second round.
De Minaur maintains his Vienna streak
De Minaur, the first man to retire, beat Matteo Berettini 7-6, 6-2 for his 350th career round-level win and his third straight semi-final in Vienna. He moves to 3,080 points, 129 behind Jodar. A win in the semifinals would take him to 3,210, one point ahead of Jodar, and the title to 3,380.
Phils out, Fritz in semis in Basel
Phils, seeded seventh in the race, went down against Taylor Fritz, 6-2, 2-0, in the Basel quarterfinals. He ends the week with 3,535 points and with it the chance to qualify this week that claimed the title. Fritz reaches his first semi-final in Basel and reaches 2,895 points, but he can’t get past Jodar this week. title would take him to 3,195.
Paul’s week ends against Alcaraz
Tommy Paul lost to Alcaraz 6-4, 7-6 in Vienna and remained at 2775 points. Already qualified, Alcaraz moves into his 50th career semifinal.
What’s left this week?
Only two contenders are still playing, de Minaur in Vienna and Fritz in Basel. Neither can make it to Tours this week. De Minaur is the only one who can change the order inside the top nine by reaching the final. His high of 3,380 remains below Tiafoe’s 3,430, so Cobolli, Phils and Tiafoe keep their spots no matter what happens this weekend.
