The Pistons chose the rookie team option Ron Holland for the 2027/28 season, according to Spotrac’s Keith Smith (Link to Twitter) and RealGM transaction log.
Holland, the fifth pick in the 2024 draft, is entering his third NBA season and will make approximately $9.1 million in 2026-27. His fourth-year option, which is now fully guaranteed, is worth $11.5 million.
Exercising that option would ensure Holland would be eligible for an extension in the 2027 offseason and could become a restricted free agent in 2028 if he doesn’t sign a new contract before then.
While many rookie team selection decisions are a mere formality, that wasn’t necessarily the case with the Pistons and Holland. Despite appearing in 159 of 164 regular-season games for Detroit over his first two NBA seasons, the 21-year-old has struggled to produce consistent offense, posting career averages of 7.3 points and 1.1 assists in 17.7 minutes per game on a .450/.246/.782 shooting percentage.
Still, Holland was a regular in the rotation on a team that won 44 games in his rookie season and 60 last season, and he ranks as one of Detroit’s most reliable perimeter defenders, second only to a finalist for Defensive Player Ausar Thompson.
How our tracker shows Holland was the only Piston team with a rookie team in the 2027/28 season. These alternative decisions must be made by November 2.
