Pinehurst Resort has announced an opening date for the latest addition to its world-renowned course lineup: Pinehurst No. 11 will host the game on March 29, 2027. Tee times will be available only to resort guests, and bookings open today.
Like most big events at Pinehurst, this is a big deal in destination golf, with some suitably big names attached. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed the No. 11, with his associate Ryan Farrow managing the training. Coore and Crenshaw are no strangers to this stretch of Sandhills; have visited since the 1970s and orchestrated the celebrated restoration of Pinehurst No. 2 more than a decade ago.
No. 11, however, sits on very different terrain along the eastern side of the 900-acre Pinehurst Sandmines property, about four miles south of the main resort and near Tom Doak’s Pinehurst No. Wild spoil piles and hollowed-out ridges have long since been reclaimed by pines and native vegetation, creating a strange, small landscape of jagged ridges and unruly mounds, adorned with pockets of trees.
The site is “totally blessed by its character,” Crenshaw said in a prepared statement accompanying the news.
Coore had another phrase for it: “I call it strangely wonderful,” he said, adding that the otherworldly landforms make the setting feel “mysterious.”
Rather than remove these eccentricities, Coore and Crenshaw made them central to the design, introducing holes through the trees and above, around and between the rumpled formations. A No. 11 occupies the eastern side of the old mine, while No. 10 stretches to the west, with the two courses touching at several points.
Like No. 10, which opened in 2024, No. 11 is intended to complement the expansive course menu at a resort known as the Cradle of American Golf. Pinehurst dates back to 1895 and has a deep association with Donald Ross, who arrived at the turn of that century as head professional and was later hired to redesign the resort’s first course. He went on to create Pinehurst No. 2, then made Pinehurst his winter home, maintaining his ties to the resort through the golden age of golf.
More than a century after Ross saw Pinehurst, the restoration of No. 2 by Coore and Crenshaw, completed in 2011, started a modern renaissance at the resort, even as it helped spark a broader restoration movement in the country. Pinehurst has continued to build on that legacy, tapping Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner for a 2018 redesign of Pinehurst No. 4 and, more recently, expanding its footprint throughout the Sandmines property with No. 10 and No. 11.
Along the way, the already prominent place of the resort in the game has also grown. Designated as the first US Open anchor site, No. 2 hosted the championship in 2024. It was the fourth time it had hosted the event. It will do so four more times until 2047 (in 2029, it will host the US Open and the US Women’s Open in consecutive weeks).
Crenshaw competed in the 1999 US Open at Pinehurst, but his connection to the resort has since extended beyond the competition into high-profile commissions.
