Pacific Notes: Curry, Simmons, Bassey, Goodwin

After leaving in warriors open practice Sunday early in a scary moment for teammates and fans, Stephen Curry a diagnosis was made: sprained right ankle, Dalton Johnson writes for NBC Bay Area.

Like many who have seen the injury in real time, the head coach Steve Kerr initially feared the worst, and was relieved when a diagnosis was made that revealed an injury that he does not believe to be serious.

“Of course we were scared”, a teammate Guy Santos said. “But this is Steph. He is cruel. He will be good. Tomorrow he will wake up and be fine. We were definitely worried. … The way I saw him walk off the court, I didn’t think it was anything too bad.”

The team has not released information on the severity or timeline for Curry as he deals with an ankle sprain heading into the season, but the most important thing is that it is not the knee injury that plagued him for much of last season.

We’ve got more from across the Pacific:

  • Ben Simmons failed miserably in his bid to regain his place in the NBA, suffering a ruptured right Achilles during The necklaces practice on Sunday. He had a $1 million contract guarantee when he was on the Opening Day roster, but due to salary continuation rules for major injury, he will receive his entire $3.5 million salary, Bobby Marks notes (via Twitter). After the diagnosis was official, Simmons took to Instagram to make an announcement. “I’ve faced challenges before that challenged me mentally, physically and emotionally and I found a way through each one” he said in a post, according to Mark J. Spears of Andscape (Link to Twitter). “This injury is another chapter in my journey, not the end of my story… I’ve been knocked down before and I’ve always found a way to get back up. This time will be no different.“
  • The Warriors have another minor injury to deal with to open the season as a backup big man Charles Bassey notes Nick Friedel of The Athletic (via Twitter). After losing Quentin Post in the offseason and still don’t Kristaps Porzingis returning from his illness, the Warriors could use Bessie’s presence as a veteran big man with some experience in Kerr’s system. Bessie played five games for Golden State last season and averaged 10.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 20.0 minutes per game.
  • Jordan Goodwin knows there is a simple formula that will keep him on the court The sun this year, according to Dwayne Rankin of the Arizona Republic. “All they need is a man” said Goodwin. “All I have to do. When should I go kill. I need to stop. I have to dive to the floor. If I should get a rebound. Or whatever. Write something on the board. Anything you need, I can go and do it.” In Rankin’s Q&A, Goodwin listed defense as his number one responsibility on the team, but his duties hardly end there, he says.
