Almost four weeks have passed since then Warriors a star Stephen Curry has been granted an extension to his expiring contract, but he continues to weigh his options and has yet to make any decisions, for ESPN’s Anthony Slater.
As Slater points out, the Warriors have made it clear to Curry that he has a wide range of options, including signing a maximum salary deal for one or two years, accepting something slightly less than the maximum or waiting to make a decision until later in the 2026/27 league year. He will be eligible for an extension until June 30, 2027.
Speaking to Slater, Curry said there would be “no drama” with his contract situation, insisting it would not be a distraction in the dressing room if there was no resolution before next Monday’s media day. After told CNBC last week that he’s not “at all” interested in free agency, he reiterated to ESPN that his “obvious goal” is to stay in Golden State for the rest of his playing career.
“It will happen at the right time when I have all the information I need to make the right decision,” Curry said of the new deal. “The team has been great, talking back and forth. If I don’t sign, it won’t affect my game or my weight. But I’ll make a decision when I’m ready.”
As Slater points out, with Currie, Jimmy Butlerand Draymond Green among the many Warriors with expiring contracts, the team could create more than $100 million in cap room. A max or near-max deal for Curry would lower that number, but still leave the team with plenty of cap space to work with.
Waiting for an extension could give the Warriors and Curry more information about what the club can realistically do next summer with that cap room, especially if the two-time MVP takes a pay cut in his next contract.
“We are in a very interesting situation” Curry said. “All the different salary cap conditions, whether I’m signing for the max or the max or whatever, I want to be on a competitive team. I want to be able to have some flexibility because we haven’t had that in years past, in the recent past.
“… This team has to have the flexibility to make the necessary moves if something happens. It’s always just judgment. For me, information and patience are key. It’s just a unique situation all around, based on where we’ve been the last four years, where I’m at in my career, what our team looks like this year and the absolute desperation to win. Trying to balance all of that.”
Curry was limited to 43 regular-season games last season because of a knee problem, but he told Slater he feels good about the way his body is as training camp begins next week.
“The idea of going back to work is exciting” said the 38-year-old security guard. “I feel like I’ve used the offseason. I feel like there’s no hesitation about where I’m at physically. … But I’m excited to get back to work.”
