Misfortune for Bell & Blaney Becomes NASCAR Win for Cindric [VIDEO]

Enjoy the Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway ended with the heart of Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney. However, Austin Cindrich had the opposite feeling as a result.

The race took place across the Mississippi River from St. Louis on Sunday afternoon (6/2/24). Michael McDowell started on pole and looked like he would have a strong car for the race. He led the first 40 laps of the race. However, Christopher Bell took over the lead with five laps remaining in the first stage and held it to win the stage.

Christopher Bell continued to make it known that he was going to be the car to beat. He took the win in the second stage of the race and led the most laps in the race. He was able to pass other cars most of the time it seemed.

Late in the race, Ryan Blaney was able to take over the race lead after green flag pit stops. Christopher Bell raced forward with the intention of regaining the lead. However, as he and Ryan battled for the lead, something broke in the #20 Toyota’s engine, ending Christopher’s dominance of the race and his chances of winning.

Then it looked like Ryan Blaney might be on his way to victory. However, Ryan would be the second driver to experience nausea in the closing laps. His #12 Ford ran out of fuel as he approached the white flag to mark the start of the race with one lap to go.

Austin Cindric, Ryan’s Team Penske teammate, grabbed the lead when he crossed the track under the white flag. It wouldn’t be heartbreaking for Austin. He raced around the track to claim the checkered flag. It was his first win at World Wide Technology Raceway and his first win of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season. The win snapped an 85-race winless streak, giving him his second career victory in NASCAR’s top division.

Denny Hamlin claimed second place. Brad Keselowski finished third. See complete race results for the Enjoy Illinois 300 here.

Leaving World Wide Technology Raceway, Denny Hamlin continues to lead the points standings. Kyle Larson maintains second place. Chase Elliott moves up to third. See the full NASCAR Cup Series Point Standings here.

NASCAR teams and drivers will head west for the Toyota / Save Mart 350 road race in the heart of California’s wine country at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday, June 9.
