Manchester United Manager Michael Carrick has apologized to fans following his side’s disappointment Champions League performance against Comadmitting the display was “unacceptable”.
United traveled to Italy under pressure after six games without a win, but their latest European outing left Carrick frustrated once again.
The former United midfielder accepted full responsibility for the performance and insisted there were no excuses for what his players produced.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Carrick gave a scathing assessment of his team’s display.
“It was beyond disappointing. I think everybody has to take responsibility for that,” he said.
“I take 100% responsibility for the overall team and the performance, that’s where it stops. It stops with me and I’m absolutely fine with that. I fully accept it.
“But as a supporter of this football club for so long, I have to say that to see a performance like this is unacceptable.”
Manchester United boss apologizes to traveling fans
Carrick was particularly disappointed with the United fans who had traveled to Italy to support their team.
The 45-year-old stressed the importance of the club’s supporters and admitted he felt compelled to apologize for what they had witnessed.
“I care an incredible amount about the fans,” Carrick said.
“They are the heartbeat of this football club and always will be. In order for them to travel, I had to apologize for the performance.
“Having to see a performance like that, I feel totally sorry for them. There are no excuses. It’s not acceptable.”
With pressure mounting on his position, Carrick was also asked if he still had the support of the Manchester United board.
However, he refused to discuss his own future, insisting that his immediate focus was on assessing performance.
“It’s not about me. It’s about digesting the game and how it went. That’s the most important thing right now.”
