A member of the Iowa marching band was taken off life support Monday, two days after collapsing just before halftime of a game against Northern Illinois.
via The Daily IowanDerek Phillips suffered a cardiac arrest at temperatures above 90 degrees.
Phillips was found to have suffered severe brain damage. His family decided on Monday to take him off life insurance.
“Derek is comfortable, surrounded by family and wrapped in the music he loved so much,” his family said in a social media post. “Thank you for every prayer, every shared experience and every bit of love you have given our son.”
It’s an incredibly tragic result, one that should prompt all universities to review policies applicable to the performance and attire of marching band members on oppressively hot days.
