Conor McGregor says his next fight will be his last and promises the event will be bigger than Canelo Alvarez has ever done before.
Ireland’s sports star is now rehabilitation of injured knee that he blew a minute of his long-awaited return to the UFC in July. No expected return date has been set for “The Notorious,” but if it does happen, it will be the biggest McGregor fight in history, according to Mac.
“How many views were made The Canelo fight get?” McGregor asked in a tweet. “How many are there? Goal? Man, I’m outselling ALL of these people. Mainly. EVERY SINGLE. Easy. Maybe even combined. I’m not even trying.”
“I was at the same time as the World Cup semi-final and I still did all these numbers in this last mess, which I have to sit with for a few more months before I come back,” he continued. “I’m actually trying to sell my next fight. My last fight. See what kind of numbers I can generate. Keep breaking your records.”
The sales pitch is already underway as McGregor claims this will be his last fight. After fans spent over $25 million to attend his no-fight against Max Holloway at UFC 329, he needs an angle like this to convince people to pay for his next spinning jump shot in the can.
After five years away from the sport, it’s clear that 38-year-old McGregor’s body can’t handle mixed martial arts. But does Conor really plan stop competing? He has one fight left on his UFC contract, and while he was reportedly paid around $30 million for his last 69-second bout, that’s still a fraction of what he’d make on the open market.
This “last stand” talk is just what it sounds like: talk. Not just to convince fans to pay big bucks to see his last dance, but to convince the UFC that this is an event worth paying for as well.
