Mavs Notes: Irving, Powell, Cisse, Injuries, Johnson

LeBron James will turn 42 in two months in the 2026/27 season, but Mavericks security guard Kyrie Irving He said Monday that he can’t imagine following his former teammate and staying in the NBA until he reaches that age. Christian Clark of The Athletic.

Irving, who is entering his 16th season and will turn 35 in March, said he still loves playing basketball but feels the NBA has become “less human” and “more robotic” since he first entered the league, adding that he doesn’t relate to the “hustle and bustle that goes into (it)” as much as he once did.

“Basketball is eternal fire” Irving said. “In terms of the NBA schedule and things like that, you have to be in love with it, too. The athleticism. The invisible hours. The media preparation. Just going in and being ready to play at a high level. Also, now you have social media and gambling that’s rampant. It’s not the NBA that I fell in love with as a kid.

“… I don’t see myself playing in the NBA at 42, 43. Shoutout to the head there (James) still goes on. Even Steph (Curry). Clay (Thompson) and James (Harden) and KD (Kevin Durant). For a while, I looked up to those guys as older brothers, but now that I’m 34-35 years old, I love my manhood and growing as a man more than growing as a basketball player.”

For the 2027/28 season, Irving has a player worth $42.4 million. If he chooses that option, he will be 36 by the time his contract expires.

We have more on Mavericks:

  • Due to the decision of the team refuse a great veteran Dwight Powell Irving said Monday that the longtime Maverick will be “greatly missed” and that he “represented a lot here in the city of Dallas” while he was the head coach. Dusty May suggested he wouldn’t be shocked to see Powell with another NBA team Grant Offset of Dallas Hoops Magazine. “Look, I’m relatively new to the NBA game, so I don’t know the ins and outs and the calendar with moves and things like that,” May said. “So, would I be surprised to see Dwight play somewhere? I wouldn’t be surprised. He’s still got a few miles left in him.”
  • with Derek Lively II is still recovering from foot surgery and Powell is no longer in the picture, the backup big man Moussa Cisse May said on Monday that he should be able to get some “game minutes” to open the season. Afseth has the details another Dallas Hoops Journal story.
  • Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News reports on injuries ahead of Wednesday’s regular-season opener against Houston (via Twitter). Max Christie (sore foot) practiced on Tuesday and will be available to play on Wednesday, but Tarik Biberavich (bursitis of the right heel) did not practice and will come out. As for a great man Saint Aldamawho is coming off foot surgery, was partial Tuesday and while he may not be ready to play Wednesday, he is “getting closer,” May said.
  • In a series of stories, Curtis, Offsetand Eddie Sefko of Mavs.com find out how May is going to use the lottery pick Morez Johnson Jr this season and consider the impact the former Michigan standout could have as a rookie. May indicated that he expects to use Johnson at both forward and center positions. “Now injuries at certain positions can determine where he plays.” Coach Maws said. “But he’ll be able to play both and end up just being a replacement piece as he expands his attacking game because defensively he can cover one to five.”
