The Mavericks cut their roster down to 15 players, waiving a veteran center Dwight Powellannounced the team (Link to Twitter). Shams Charania of ESPN first reported the move (Link to Twitter).
Powell was the longest tenured member of the organization, spending the last 12 years in Dallas after being acquired in 2014. Shortly before the start of training camp, he re-signed with the Mavericks with an Exhibit 10 contract that included $1 million in guarantees. That number would have risen to $1.5 million if it had been part of the opening night lineup.
“Dwight was the consummate professional during his 12 seasons with the Mavericks and embodies everything you want in someone representing your organization.” president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri says the press release. “He is a tireless worker, an incredible teammate and one whose impact extends far beyond the basketball court and into the Dallas community. We are grateful for all that Dwight has contributed to this franchise. He will always be a part of the Mavericks family and Dallas will always be his home. We wish him the best in this next chapter.”
After refusal guards Seth Lundy and John PullakidasThe Mavericks had to part with one more player to reach the 15-man roster limit for the start of the regular season. Like us in detail on Saturday, the most logical candidates for the move were Moussa Cisse, Caleb Martin and Marcus Sasserbut they would all involve parting with a greater guarantee of money than the simple release of Powell.
Still to come…
