The Mavericks announced that on Saturday Cooper Flagg will be reassessed”next week” after he suffered a mild sprain in his left shoulder the second quarter of Friday’s game at Indiana. However, it looks like he won’t be around for long.
After initially listing Flagg as questionable for Monday’s game against Miami, the Mavs have now upgraded him to probable, according to Grant Offset of the Dallas Sports Journalwho writes that last year’s No. 1 overall pick went after the team’s shootaround this morning.
Flagg, the reigning Rookie of the Year winner, missed Saturday’s home opener against San Antonio with an injury.
Here’s more about Mavericks:
- While Flagg seems to have a good chance to return tonight, Dallas will still be short as Nazi marshal was ruled out due to illness, Offset adds. Caleb Martin was initially listed as questionable after missing the first three games of the season with a sprained right thumb, but was downgraded to release. Saint Aldama (surgery on the right knee), Derek Lively II (surgery on the right foot) and Tarik Biberavich (right heel bursitis) remain sidelined — all three players have yet to make their season debut (or NBA debut, in Bieber’s case).
- With Flagg and Kyrie Irving (ACL Guide) in Game 2 on Saturday, the Mavericks’ loss to the Spurs was predictable. However, the rookie guard Sergio de Laurea was a bright spot with 21 points (on 9-of-15 shooting), five rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes after going zero points in eight minutes in his first two NBA games, writes Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News. “I thought he was great“, head coach Dusty May said. “His defense is improving. I thought his on-ball defense got better. He was chasing long rebounds. “Overall, just a very, very good performance from a young player against one of the best defensive backfields, considering (Stefan) Castle and (Devin) Wassel and those guys.”
- May suggested de Laurea, the 25th pick in June’s draft, could earn more playing time with his play, per Offset. “I mean, obviously, it was a great opportunity for him. He didn’t get the same last night in Indiana for obvious reasons, those minutes went to Kupp and Kyrie” May said.”But he’s definitely earned more and more trust, and he’s been playing so pretty consistently. Considering Summer League, exhibition play (preseason) and practice, he has a great attitude every day. So 33 minutes against a team like San Antonio is a good night for (de Laurea).”
