Wigan Warriors won the second leg of a potential sensational treble by winning the Super League Leaders’ Shield on Friday.
Wigan Warriors claimed top spot in the Super League and the League Leaders’ Shield after a 50-12 last-round victory over Catalans Dragons, meaning Matt Peet’s side remain on course for a domestic treble.
After claiming Challenge Cup glory in May at Wembley with victory over Hull KR, Wigan lifted their second piece of silverware on Friday with a dominant success at home to the Dragons.
The Warriors scored nine tries through Harry Smith, Liam Marshall (two), Brad O’Neill, retired Liam Farrell, Austin Daniel, Jai Field, Zach Eckersley and Adam Keighran. Keighran also added 14 points from the shootout.
The only other team capable of taking top spot and the League Leaders’ Shield were Leeds Rhinos, and due to their much larger points difference, a win over Hull FC would have been enough if Wigan were to slip up, but Peet’s side ensured that was never likely to happen. In any case, Leeds fell to a shock 18-12 defeat at home to Hull on Friday.
Wigan will now look to complete their season by winning a treble with success in the Super League grand final at Old Trafford on October 3, after suffering last season’s final defeat to Hull KR. They and Leeds will have next week off as the play-offs begin, before meeting in the respective semi-finals at home on September 25 and 26.
