Wing Claudia Moloney-MacDonald scored four tries as England’s Red Roses beat the USA in New Jersey.
The Red Roses of England responded to back-to-back shock losses in Canada with a crushing 55-12 WXV Global Series win over USA in New Jersey, getting back to winning ways.
John Mitchell’s side went into the contest on the back of losing two consecutive Tests for the first time in a decade, and having lost their 41-Test, four-year unbeaten run in Toronto.
A competitive first half against the USA saw 10 points at half-time, but the second half was mostly one-way traffic, as England’s lead showed.
In all, the Red Roses scored nine goals through wing Claudia Moloney-MacDonald (four), center Meg Jones, wing Mia Venner, substitute Bryony Field and back rows Maddie Feaunati and Sadia Kabeya.
The USA scored two tries through hoop Hope Rogers and substitute defender Kate Zackary, but shipped three second-half tries in nine minutes with prop Mona Tupou in the penalty box due to repeated scrum penalties.
Jones: We’re going to revisit this tournament – we’re hungry to improve
Red Roses captain Meg Jones said after the match:
“First of all, credit to the USA, I think they came off the back of some amazing wins and got so much momentum. They’re putting in such a good effort out there, building and growing the game.
“For us, we just wanted to control the game and impose on them.
“When we came in, we kept the ball and everyone was a threat on the line. At that time we were unstoppable.
“After two losses, we just wanted to learn and we will continue to learn. We got a lot of feedback from this tournament.
“We’re going to go and look at it, reflect and see where we can continue to grow. Because I know there’s so much growth in this team.
“We’re hungry to get better.”
Red Roses captain Meg Jones said the team will review their North American tour after the game
Moloney-MacDonald: Tonight was about proving myself
Moloney-MacDonald man of the match said:
“This week was all about proving myself.
“Obviously we’ve had three really tough games against Canada and the last two weeks haven’t gone the way we wanted.
“For us, it was about learning as much as we could from those two shows. A challenge we’ve never faced before.
“We talked a lot about going out there and being fearless tonight. That’s exactly what we did. We attacked it from minute zero to minute 80.
“I am very proud of the girls, how we showed up today.
“That’s what the Red Roses are all about.”
Perris-Redding: We were in the game in the first half – the score doesn’t take away from our growth
USA co-captain Georgie Perris-Redding said:
“We were in it in the first half, and that was really tough because I was so proud of the girls.
“We came into this game confident, you’ve seen the streak we’ve had and built.
“We lost it a little bit in the second half, so it’s disappointing.
“But I’m very proud of the growth this team has made. Today’s result doesn’t take that away.”
