Enzo Maresca has made it clear that there are no members of his own Manchester City The team is unstoppable despite the public show of support for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Donnarumma was guilty of both goals as City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa last Saturday, and subsequently rested when Maresca’s won Brighton and Hove Albion in a penalty shoot-out to progress to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
Gerónimo Rulli made two penalty saves to secure City’s progression, but Maresca confirmed immediately afterwards that the squad for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton would be “Gigio plus 10”.
Pressed for these comments in his pre-match press conference, Maresca said: “I think it’s one thing to say that at the moment he’s Gigio plus 10, and another thing to say that he’s unstoppable.
“They are two different things. There is no player who is unstoppable but there is a moment where it is Gigio plus ten because at the moment I see it that way.
“Any player makes mistakes, (what is) important is to move on, understand why, learn from this mistake and move on. At the moment we are talking about Gigio but we remember the last minutes of the stoppage at Manchester United away.
“All players make mistakes at some point in the season, sometimes it costs points and sometimes not because we’re lucky, but I think it’s a normal process for Gigio.”
Maresca has confirmed that Antoine Semenyo is the only City player unavailable for the game as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury.
“They are all available,” he said in his press conference “(Apart from Antoine Semenyo, the rest are available).
“He’s (Semenyo) good. He’s in good spirits. He’s in the building doing the recovery sessions and the therapy he needs, but it’s too early at the moment.”
