ten men Tottenham rescued a deserved 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the discount time in a dramatic Premier League match at Old Trafford.

Dominic Solanke’s deft header into the bottom corner earned Spurs the point their performance deserved after missing many chances in the game, with Bryan Mbeumo’s second-half long-time look to seal the points for a United side who were second-best in the game.

Spurs will be all the more pleased to take something away from the game after a red card for Rodrigo Bentancur, who was given his marching orders for a headbutt on Luke Shaw.

The draw leaves Man Utd with just one Premier League win in six this season, while Roberto De Zerbi’s men still await their first win of the campaign and climb from the bottom of the table to 18th.

Match statistics

The spurs waste again

A familiar story for their season so far, Spurs will have been left kicking in the first half after seeing a number of chances slip away despite an encouraging performance.

They should have gone ahead after three minutes when a poor pass from Senne Lammens allowed Lucas Bergvall to send Dominic Solanke through on goal, but the striker’s effort was saved before the keeper smothered the rebound.

The visitors continued to create chances, with Mohammed Kudus squandering a golden opportunity in the 21st minute after Savio cut the ball to him. The winger could only fire wide, leaving De Zerbi frustrated on the touchline as Spurs failed to convert their dominance into goals.

United gradually found their feet but offered little going forward, with Amad Diallo’s home effort his first shot of the game.

Spurs stayed on top though and had another excellent opening when Solanke played in Conor Gallagher, only for the midfielder to hesitate and allow the recovering defense to snuff out the danger.

Mbeumo punishes Spurs

United started much brighter after the break initially, with some good play seeing a Luke Shaw cross deflected away by Jan Paul van Hecke, but Spurs’ chances also kept coming, as well as more missed chances.

Savio couldn’t get enough power into a shot to find the net after beating Senne Lammens, before Solanke grabbed a first-time goal from a Savio through ball.

United certainly had more to offer than at the start of the second period, with Youri Tielemans finding the bottom of the corner from Matheus Cunha’s pass, but the ball had been ruled out of play just before. The game was stretching at this point and it looked to be suiting United, although their pressing didn’t lead to too many clear-cut chances.

Instead, another golden opportunity passed for the visitors, with Savio’s shot deflected away thanks to a great block from Kobbie Mainoo.

All night it looked like those chances would come back to haunt De Zerbi’s men, and the story of their season looked set to continue when Mbeumo picked up the ball from Cunha and turned inside the box before slotting home a trademark finish into the bottom corner.

Bentancur sees red but Spurs counterattack

His task was made even more difficult when Bentancur was dismissed for headbutting Shaw after the left-back reacted angrily to the Uruguayan’s early dangerous challenge. Shaw and Van Hecke were also booked for the foul but Bentancur could not complain about the decision and De Zerbi’s look of dejection was clear to see as another defeat now looked imminent.

But the unlikely goal finally arrived in added time for Spurs, with Sandro Tonali’s cross taking the slightest touch on Solanke before the ball sunk into the far corner with United players at a standstill.
