When Lex Luger broke into the wrestling business in the mid-1980s, some of his first matches were against Ric Flair in Florida Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance. Over the years, Flair and Luger had many Steel Cage and Championship matches, but one of their first matches was a non-televised “Broadway” match (a 60-minute tie). At this point, Flair was a seasoned veteran, but Luger was still an inexperienced rookie, and in a recent interview; “We’re going ringside.” The WWE Hall of Famer addressed “The Nature Boy” leading him through an hour-long bout together.
“I’ve only been wrestling for a few months and they tell me I have to wrestle for an hour and I’m like, ‘How am I going to do that?’ The Rick called the Sunset Flip is a very basic move in wrestling during the game. I said: what is that? Rick went. “Oh my God!” But he got me by an hour. But yeah, an hour of Broadway, that’s a lot of wrestling,” he explained. “For a guy who didn’t know wrestling yet. That was too much. Only Flair could get a guy like me in an hour of a match like that. crazy That’s how good he is in the ring.”
Years later, Flair and Luger would produce some instant classics together, including their iconic battle at NWA Starrcade 1988 for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, and again at NWA WrestleWar 1990 for the same title. Additionally, “Broadway” wasn’t their only play with time constraints legendary clash at the NWA Battle of the Belts in September 1986 being Luger’s first world heavyweight televised opportunity.
