Exeter Chiefs boss Rob Baxter officiated England flyer Immanuel Feyi-Waboso has been ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Toulouse for the Champions Cup, but a scan has cleared him of serious hamstring damage, so he could only be out for a week.

Feyi-Waboso, who scored two tries in the Gallagher PREM defeat in Bath, limped out of Sunday’s win over Newcastle Red Bulls early in the second half, but fears that he could face another lengthy layoff have now been allayed.

Baxter is hoping for the winger, who has started in all three Englands Nations Championship games in the summer, goals attempts against Fiji and Argentina, can return on the road to their West Country rivals Bristol Bears weekly on Saturday.

That would leave Feyi-Waboso, who has an enhanced RFU contract and missed this year’s Six Nations after damaging his hamstring in January, with two weeks off before England begin the second leg of the competition against Australia at Twickenham on 8 November.

He is fourth Bosses winger ruled out with injury and Campbell Riddle, Olly Woodburn and Paul Brown-Bampoe nursing problems, so Baxter will have to go to Toulouse with either Tommy Wyatt, Zak Wimbush, Sam Harris or Ben Hammersley.

“He has some awareness of it. The scan doesn’t show too much, and we’re hoping it’s one of those things. The scan always tends to show something, but the player feels very little about it. But actually, on testing he’s very good,” said Baxter achen asked about the severity of his star’s injury.

“So we’re hoping to get the symptoms he’s showing up pretty soon and see where he goes in the next week or so.

“Given that he reports it so well and is functionally so good, we may not have to intervene much.

“I’m not hearing anything from our physios that there should be a long-term problem.

“Yesterday there was an English physio to assess the scans and assess Manny,” he added.
