Lakers Notes: Looney, Mamukelashvili, Bronny, Doncic

Kevon Looney consider nova-sp Lakers list benefits from the team bonding experience while spending time with Luka Doncic in Slovenia, relays BasketNews. In a recent interview with ESPN LA (Link to YouTube), Looney called it a unique experience in his long NBA career.

“I’ve been in the league for a while and this is the first time I’ve done something like this.” he said. “To go to somebody’s home country and get all of us together and spend so much time together, I’ve never done that before. So it shows his character that he really wants to win. He wants people to know his background, why he is who he is, and I think he’s done a good job. He’s a great player and a great leader and he likes to show what he can do on the court. And we got to see his personal life off the court, so we’re going to run through the wall for him.”

Looney, who was part of three championship teams with Golden State, hopes to return to title contention after spending last season in New Orleans. He signed a annual, veteran minimum contract with Los Angeles in July and could become the primary backup big man Walker Kessler.

More on the Lakers:

  • Sandro Mamukelashviliwho achieved a four-year deal from Los Angeles in free agency this summer, was also impressed by Doncic’s hospitality, trans Aris Barkas of Eurohoops. “They showed us a lot of great places and Ljubljana is a very, very nice city,” he said. “Also, it was great for a new team. There were a bunch of new guys on the team and you know, we’re all together, it didn’t even feel like a lot of new guys.”
  • Playing without his father as a teammate for the first time in his NBA career, Bronnie James spoke with ESPN LA (Link to video on Twitter) about what he’s been working on in the offseason. “In all directions”, he said. “I’m trying to get better, I’m playing with Luka and (Austin Reeves) though, so I’ll be off the ball if needed. I need to be able to make shots and create for others, and I think I’ve done well with that this summer. I feel like I can be a secondary to Luka and AR and generate any kind of catch-and-shoot offense and pick-and-roll and stuff like that. So, you know, I’m just proud to be an all-around player, and whatever it takes, I’m willing to give it.”
  • In an interview published in the Lakers Instagram accountDoncic is asked to give unambiguous answers to various questions. He picks “patience” as his strongest strength on the court, jokingly calls Reeves “annoying” and describes the team as “happy.”
