Appears Karl-Anthony Towns does not want to give Nix nice renewal discount.
According to reports, negotiations between the two parties have reached an impasse ESPN’s Shams Charania and Vincent Goodwilland a deal is considered unlikely before the team begins training camp next week.
Towns will earn $57 million this coming season and has a $61 million player option in the 2027/28 campaign. He is eligible for an extension of up to four years and $273 million.
Representatives of the Knicks and Towns have had numerous discussions this offseason, but there has been little movement in negotiations recently, according to the ESPN duo.
SNY’s Ian Begley (Link to Twitter) hears that talks have been positive and the Knicks have made it clear they value Towns highly and want him to stay long-term. They discussed deals starting in the $45 million to $50 million range, Begley adds.
However, the Knicks have serious capital issues in the coming years and ownership James Dolan declared after the team won its first championship in 53 years, he wanted to avoid the penalty of a second tax apron down the road.
Jalen Brunson signed a team-friendly four-year, $156.5 million contract two years ago to give the front office more roster flexibility.
Along with football-related issues, the Knicks also have to consider Towns’ age — he’ll turn 31 in mid-November — and his past injury history.
Towns averaged 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds in 75 regular season games last season. He averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 55% shooting in the playoffs last season.
He played in 72 regular-season games in 2024-25, his first with New York, but has played in 50 or fewer games in three of his last five seasons with Minnesota.
Nix Josh Hart and Miles McBride are also eligible for extension.
