KCB will be looking to complete their title defense on the National Sevens Circuit this weekend, after claiming the Embu 7s title in the penultimate weekend of action on Sunday.
National Week in 2026 Kenya will embark on their final weekend of action at the Christie 7s in Nairobi, the oldest official rugby sevens tournament in the country with its inaugural tournament way back in 1964.
KCB will go into the weekend having won three of their previous five matches, their run at the Embu 7s capped off with a tense 12-10 victory over arch-rivals Kabras Sugar in the grand final.
KCB held on through tries from Kenyan star of the week Vincent Onyala and Emmanuel Opondo, with the conversion proving the difference between the two sides and giving the table leaders quick revenge after Kabras beat them at the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa, briefly topping the table.
The result was all the more impressive given that many of KCB’s biggest stars recently left the club to play in the Ultimate Sevens tournament, which starts this weekend in Cardiff.
“I believe the team is in a better place,” Samuel Asati told Citizen TV Kenya after their win.
“It’s a credit to the team (to win), and I believe we have the depth to get the job done. The guys we’re leaving back (in Kenya), they’ve done a good job.”
“The team is very much capable of winning the Christie 7s, and winning overall.”
“I think we knew we didn’t make it in Mombasa,” added KCB head coach Andrew Amonde.
“The physical part of it was missing, so it was something we talked about before and we knew Kabras’ strength. If we were able to match them physically, we could get our chances and we could execute when it mattered.”
The result in Embu leaves Kabras Sugar needing to not only win the Christie 7s but aim to ensure KCB finish no higher than third to keep their six-point lead at the top of the table intact, making this weekend’s potential quarter-final clash the most critical of the season.
For KCB, the team needs to finish third or higher to secure a title defence, setting the stage for an exciting final weekend of action at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
After this weekend, all eyes will turn to Kenya’s final weeks tournament in 2026, Safari Weeks in mid-October, with a focus on preparing the national team for their second foray into SVNS 2 in 2027.
