It A critique of the latest WWE theme songs released reached an all-time high this year for its fans and talent, prompting many to reminisce about former company composer Jim Johnston, who is responsible for creating the most famous entrance in wrestling history. For years, fans have wanted Johnston to return, especially since Def Rebel became a staple of WWE’s music, and during a recent interview. “Ropes N Riffs” The 74-year-old gave his honest opinion on the promotion’s current theme songs and the overall state of its output.
“I mean, the themes were really related to this person, and now it just happens to be the music that’s playing most of the time. Of course there are exceptions, but it’s music that happens to be playing when wrestlers come into the ring, and it’s kind of interchangeable,” he explained. “The plots don’t feel intense, and I’ve heard from a lot of people that their biggest criticism is that the plots come out of nowhere and change too quickly. Like all of a sudden these two guys hate each other, but we’re supposed to be really mad that they hate each other, only we have absolutely no idea why they hate each other.”
Earlier this year, Johnston calls WWE music ‘gross’ and claimed it just “sounds like noise”. Additionally, he believes that creating stars in WWE has become more difficult due to the lack of effort put into the entrance themes. Johnston has fronted iconic tracks such as The Rock’s ‘If You Smell’ to The Undertaker’s ‘Rest in Peace’ and despite expressing a desire to return to his former role, he believes: WWE wouldn’t ask him to come back.
