Jeff Passan believes an MLB lockout is coming this offseason. His biggest concern: how long it could take baseball’s owners and the MLB Players Association to reach a new agreement.
During his appearance on All the Smoke Baseball, the ESPN MLB insider described a lockout as something he expects to happen, leaving the length of a potential work stoppage as the major question heading toward the 2027 season.
The current collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, expires December 1, 2026. That agreement sets the terms governing player compensation and working conditions. Negotiations for its replacement will determine the rules under which Major League Baseball operates beginning in 2027.
A lockout is a work stoppage imposed by owners. If one begins this offseason, its impact on the 2027 schedule would depend on how long negotiations last. An offseason lockout does not automatically mean regular-season games will be canceled.
Baseball’s previous lockout lasted 99 days before MLB and the players’ union reached an agreement on March 10, 2022. Passan’s prediction raises the question of whether the next labor fight could stretch into spring training—or threaten regular-season baseball.
How long do you think it would take MLB and the players’ union to make a deal? Drop your prediction in the comments.
