Given the number of factors that go into determining winners and losers in NFL games, it’s hard to chalk up the Cowboys’ back-to-back losing streak to running back Javonte Williams carrying the ball 23 times in Weeks 5 and 6.
Still, offensive balance is always a good thing, and it wasn’t hard to see a difference in the way the Cowboys were attacking the Eagles on Monday night. Williams kept getting the ball rolling and it was no coincidence that they fueled a drive that resulted in a convincing 38-21 road win.
Williams rushed 25 times for a career-high 155 yards and sealed the win with a fourth-quarter touchdown. The Cowboys also passed the ball to Tyler Goodson 11 times, while Dak Prescott was connecting with CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens for three touchdowns through the air.
“It was good to give (head coach Brian Schottenheimer) FAITH to keep calling the runs,” Williams said, via the team’s website. “He put a big emphasis on that this week — to get at least 25 hurries a game. . . . We were just trying to get back to a balanced attack and I feel like we did a great job tonight. We have a powerful offense and when you have GP, CeeDee, Jake Ferguson, those guys on the outside, I mean, it’s going to open up the race.”
The Cowboys managed just 29 points in their losses to the Packers and Buccaneers in the previous two games, and that’s not a recipe for success for a team that’s built around an ability to put up points in bunches. Monday night was more like that, and the Cowboys will try to stay in the groove they found in Philadelphia.
