‘It all happened so fast’: Callum Sheedy on viral moment against Scarlets

Callum Sheedy has seen and done it all during his playing career, but this week was a real first for him.

The Welsh international half went viral after his header during Cardiff Rugby’s 21-15 win over BKT URC away to Scarlets last weekend.

Footage of the unusual incident has been viewed more than 800,000 times on social media and has sparked countless comments with divided opinions on whether it was legal or not.

Sheedy admits he is unsure of the result himself as he reflects on what he was thinking as he chased his own kick during the second half in Llanelli.

“I probably wasn’t thinking, that was the problem!” he said.

“I remember the ball sitting and I could see Blair (Murray) coming towards me and I thought it was going to be an aerial contest.

“I thought there had to be a way to get the ball past him and there wasn’t enough time to get it down to my feet, so the closest part of my body was my head. It all happened so fast.”

“I laughed, looking back at the video, and the guys gave me some stick.”

17-cap Sheedy says he was surprised the video went viral.

“I didn’t really think about it at the time. Then, after the game, I turned on my phone and my Instagram blew up a little bit. I’m glad people are enjoying it.”

Cardiff fell behind three times during a hard-fought battle but eventually secured the spoils.

“It was far from a perfect performance,” admits Sheedy.

“But to get the win was huge.

“Four points away in the first derby game of the season, you’d be mad not to take it.”

They now go into their first home league game of the season with Zebras Parma visitors to the Arms Park on Friday night.

“I’m really excited to get out there,” said Cardiff-born Sheedy.

“Last season we only lost one game there. We built a bit of a fortress.

“I hope we get a big crowd. I remember last year there were a lot of close games and a lot of the time in the last 10 minutes the crowd really overpowered us.

“That’s why I really hope the fans will come out in their numbers and do it again.

“It makes a big difference.

“Until you’re there, you don’t understand.

“When there’s five minutes left and you’re blowing and you hear Cardiff sing, it gives you that extra two per cent to push on.

“I can’t say enough how good the fans were last season.

“When we attack or defend our line and you hear that buzz around the stadium, it gives you that little bit of juice.

“I remember defending sets towards the end of games last season and you’re fired up and you have to work a little bit harder because you know you’ve got 10 or 11,000 people with you.”

Sheedy, who turns 31 later this month, has now added competition for the number 10 shirt with Jarrod Evans returning to the club from Harlequins, while a third Wales international, Ioan Lloyd, is also in the mix.

“All I can do as a player is to do my best and perform to the best of my ability,” he said.

“We all want to be number one, so it will be a challenge because we will all want to play. I’m sure it will be healthy competition.”
