With Curry Brand enters a new chapter with Li-Ning, It seems like the perfect time to take a deeper dive into the future of the brand, what we know so far and Steph Curry’s golf game.
Most people know Steph as the best shooter in NBA history, but you might be shocked to learn how talented he is on the golf course. Without giving too many spoilers, I can tell you that he is probably much better than you think.
Hint: He played on the Korn Ferry Tour.
While we patiently await Curry Brand’s first official golf shoe of the post-Under Armor era, let me tell you all a little more about Steph’s history on the golf course and what to expect from the new collaboration between Curry Brand and Li-Ning.
Brand Curry + Li-Ning
Li-Ning is a $4-billion Company with a portfolio that includes a mix of running, basketball, badminton and table tennis.
Steph, Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade are the most prominent basketball athletes aligned with Li-Ning and Steph is the first to unveil a golf shoe in the Li-Ning ecosystem.
We don’t know much about the first Curry Brand golf shoe but my initial thoughts led me straight to the adidas MC87 and it will definitely be a talking point if the shoe becomes available to the public. The design itself leans more European and is sure to ruffle some feathers among Steph fans.
Although a release date for this specific shoe has not been announced, we know that Curry Brand and Li-Ning have golf in their plans moving forward.
Steph Curry (the golfer)
When you think of professional athletes who also play golf, some names probably come to mind, such as:
- Tony Romo
- Charles Barkley
- Michael Jordan
- Michael Phelps
This might be a bold take, but Steph will wipe the floor with any of them. Romo technically has a lower handicap, but with Steph still adjusting season after season in the NBA, he had the competitive edge over Romo in an 18-hole match. Both golfers are plus-handicaps with Romo hovering in the plus-1 to plus-3 range and Steph sitting right around scratch at plus-1.
In 2017, Steph played in a Korn Ferry Tour event, shooting 74 consecutive rounds and “narrowly” missing the cut by … 11 shots. To put things into perspective, the tournament winner finished 18 under over four days of competition. If you think your favorite athlete in one sport can compete with the best of the best in another, they can’t.
While we wait for the first Curry Brand x Li-Ning golf shoe, just remember that Steph is not only the best three-point shooter of all time, but he’s also really good at golf and will take your lunch money any day of the week.
