Twice retired 40 year old Cougars fly-half Benjamin Urdapilleta made Top 14 history on Saturday after making his second of three shots USA Perpignan vs Racing 92 match.
At the start of the match, the former Pumas international had 2,611 points in the Top 14, just a couple behind Romain Teulet in the professional era. The half-time then matched Teulet’s record after he converted Braydon Ennor’s try and then added two more successful penalty kicks, setting a new record of 2,619.
Despite USA Perpignan’s 55-25 defeat at the hands of Racing 92, it was a day to remember for the club, fans and players as it etched its name in the French club’s history.
After starting his senior career with Argentinian side CUBA, the fly half moved first to England 2010. represent Harlequins before finally establishing itself France two years later.
He first played for US Oyonnax, helping the team win Pro D2 and scored over 700 points for the club and then signed with Castres in 2015 and remained there until 2023.
It was with Castres that he achieved his greatest success, helping the historic southern French club win the Top 14 title in 2018 and end a five-year drought. Facing Montpellier in the final, Urdapilleta enjoyed a man-of-the-match night, scoring 19 points off the tee and setting up Julien Dumora for a full-back try.
The 2020/2021 season proved to be his most successful campaign, as he collected 321 points for Castres despite the club not making it into the top 14 play-offs.
He went for Clermont in 2023 and spent two seasons at the club before signing for the Catalan side USA Perpignan 2025, where he was instrumental in the team’s fight against relegation.
However, this is not the only Top 14 record that Urdapilleta holds, as he also scored the most points in a single game against Montpellier on 13 February 2021, with 33 points in that Top 14 game.
