Geoff Parling pinpoints shoddy Leicester Tigers habit he’s desperate to fix

Leicester head coach Geoff Parling felt his side recovered well from “no punches” early on as they bounced back from defeat Gloucester at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

The home side were 14-0 down after just 10 minutes, but 31 unanswered points set them well on their way to a second straight win at Gallagher Prem.

However, slow starts have characterized their early season form and Parling has a habit of ending them soon.

He said: “We can’t start games like we are at the moment.

“We haven’t started well in games a lot of times this season, so the first 10 minutes, 14-0 lead (to Gloucester), but I didn’t feel like we had a shot, so I felt very calm there.

“There were some really good parts the rest of the game.

“They’ve got multiple threats around the ball – the likes of Jac Morgan, Dewi Lake – and I thought our holding was great, I felt the way we pressured through our defence, you’re starting to see that coming more into how we want it to be.

“We did some really good things and we actually feel a bit drained at the end of the game after giving them those two bonus points, but I think it’s a sign of the desire of the team.

“We have five points and a great performance against a team that is going well.”

Early tries from Jac Morgan and Dian Bleuler gave Gloucester the lead, but Finn Carnduff, Joe Heyes and Jamie Blamire scored before half-time to turn the match in Leicester’s favour.

Tries from Aaron Wainwright and Ollie Hassell-Collins made the game safe for the Tigers, although the visitors took two forfeit bonus points thanks to goals from Will Trenholm and Jack Innard.

After his side’s League One defeat, Gloucester head coach George Skivington said: “If you break the season, any manager will say, ‘if you’re taking points away from home, that’s a positive.’

“I think we’re just a little bit frustrated right now because we don’t really feel like we’re in the game.

“We had a really good start with our maul but after that I think it was half an hour before we got back into their 22.

“We made, not basic mistakes – because nothing is as simple as it looks – but we dropped a few high balls and a few things we’re really good at we didn’t quite understand.

“I felt like after the first 10 minutes in the first half Leicester had all the pressure and used it.

“All the momentum was with Leicester and we almost couldn’t do anything without getting pinged (punished). It’s not the officials, it’s just the nature of the momentum.”
