Scotland and Lions Star Finn Russell does not want to repeat the mistakes of the past and is setting parameters around the length of his Test career.
The mercurial fly-half has a few more seasons left on his £1m-a-year deal Bath and will be 35 years old by the 2027 World Cup Australia is over.
By then, Russell will surely be a centurion for Scotland – he is currently five short of the milestone – and could even overtake Ross Ford (110 caps) as his country’s record holder for most Test appearances.
“I have this year and next year in Bath,” he told Somerset Live. “So I think it takes me to the summer of 2028.
“It’s funny, it’s something people ask you, you know, what do you think after the next World Cup and Test commitments in 2028 and where you’re going to play or what you’re going to do.
“I don’t want to put a number on it, I don’t want to be like, ‘oh, I’ll finish after the World Cup or I’ll finish after that season.’
“Maybe I’ve said it a few times and in a few days I’m just like, no, I don’t know.
“It’s hard to tell you, it could be in a year, a year and a half, it could be in four years that I’m like, maybe now I’ve had enough of this and I want something different or I want more free time to spend with my family, I’m not sure yet.
“I’m just going to play as long as I enjoy it, I’m just going to keep going as long as I can. I don’t have anything to stop anytime soon. I hope that’s a good thing, but we’ll see.”
