FIFA’s transfer window analysis details mammoth $9.89 billion market

September 4: Players who took part in this summer’s World Cup accounted for more than $3.3 billion in transfer fees during a record half-year window, according to FIFA’s latest international transfer figures.

In total, 267 players from 47 national teams in the tournament changed clubs during the window, a significant part of the men’s market that reached $9.89 billion in international transfer spending.

FIFA has presented the numbers as evidence of the World Cup’s influence on the transfer market, although the figures do not distinguish between moves driven by tournament performances and deals that were already planned.

There is also the argument that players such as Enzo Fernandez, Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande would likely command significant fees regardless of this summer’s festivities.

What is clear is the scale of the summer market, which saw an estimated 12,500 international transfers in the men’s game, setting another record for a half-year window.

As it stands now, English clubs were comfortably the biggest spenders at $3.02 billion, followed by Italy at $1.1 billion, Spain at $940 million, Germany at $904 million and France at $641 million.

France sat at the other end of the market, with its clubs receiving $1.7 billion in transfer fees, more than any other country. English clubs contributed $1.43 billion, albeit largely through players bought from each other, followed by Germany with $1.02 billion.

The women’s market is obviously much smaller, but it grew considerably faster. International spending more than doubled from the equivalent window last year to a record $28.6 million, helped by 19.2% more transfers made.

Women’s international transfer spend is less than 0.3% of the men’s total, although the direction of the women’s market is moving in the right direction and has much to celebrate.
