Former Major League Baseball pitcher Scott Erickson testified on Friday that much of the $46 million he earned in his 17 years playing baseball went to taxes, real estate, “bad business decisions” and his ex-wife.
A jury on Wednesday said Erickson is liable for $176 million in compensatory damages to the family of brothers Mark and Jacob Iskanders, who were killed when Erickson’s girlfriend Rebecca Grossman struck them with her SUV in a crosswalk in Westlake Village, California, on Sept. 29, 2020.
Erickson was speeding in an SUV near her, and witnesses said they were racing.
Rebecca Grossman is equally liable, too, and now jurors are considering possible punitive damages. Erickson testified for about 45 minutes on Friday (June 5), and he answered questions about the money he earned in Major League Baseball, and the $13,000 before taxes he gets every month through his MLB pension.
“And where is all that money?” the Iskanders’ lawyer Brian Panish asked.
“Taxes,” Erickson said as Panish interjected, “Taxes. They took 100% tax?”
“No, I wasn’t finished?” Erickson said. He said he “put money into real estate that I no longer own.”
“I made some bad business decisions, and then when I got divorced, I paid my wife,” Erickson testified.
