England latest: Cole Palmer withdraws from Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of long international break | Football News

Cole Palmer is pulling out of the England squad due to a muscle injury.

Sky Sports News understands that Morgan Gibbs-White will be called up as his replacement.

Palmer, who was left out of Tuchel’s World Cup squad in the summer, played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s defeat by Brentford after returning for the Three Lions’ League of Nations matches against Spain, the Czech Republic and Croatia.

After announcing his squad for the September and October games, Tuchel revealed what both Gibbs-White and Palmer needed to do to become regulars.

England manager Thomas Tuchel explained last week why he decided to bring Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold into his England squad.

“We can see the form Morgan is in and he finished the season very strongly and was a key player for Forest to avoid relegation. We can see him growing now,” Tuchel said.

“It’s one thing to be nominated and to come back into the team and perform. Cole has to put up those kinds of numbers and performances to get his jersey and justify the nomination.”

After battling injuries last season, Palmer said Sky Sports that he felt he was back to full fitness coming into the new campaign.

“Physically I feel good, probably the best I’ve felt in years, but I think I can (get fitter) with games and more minutes,” Palmer said.

“Before my hip injury, I would never get hurt. Well, rarely (injured). So then I’d come back and play when I wasn’t supposed to play.

“Obviously the World Cup was coming up, so I was in a dilemma thinking: ‘If I don’t play, I won’t go. But if I play then, I can’t play (properly).”

“It was just a bit of a sticky situation. I didn’t know how to deal with it, but it’s one of those things. I was just seeing different people, I had different ideas about why I got hurt and what it was.

“Since I’ve been back I’ve been working every day to stop it happening again. I just want to stay injury free, and if I’m on the pitch then I know what I can do.”

Mainoo and Rashford are doubtful for international break

Manchester United DOUBLE Kobbie Mainoo AND Marcus Rashford they are both doubts for England.

The pair were substituted during United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Rashford had a hamstring injury that the club has been dealing with since the summer’s World Cup. He will be assessed but is unlikely to make the England squad.

Mainoo is another doubt – the midfielder played 80 minutes against Fulham but the injury is likely to rule him out of England duty, despite Carrick saying he was substituted for tactical reasons.

The 24-year-old was part of the World Cup squad in the summer but did not play a single minute, something Tuchel promised would not happen this international break.

Sky Sports Chief Correspondent Kaveh Solhekol explains some of the key mistakes Tuchel has learned from with his latest England squad.

“I expect him to be on the pitch and it’s my job to put him on the pitch. That was completely my responsibility. He didn’t do bad during the World Cup,” Tuchel said.

“He was a class act on the training pitch. There was great competition; we played Reece (James) in central midfield as well. Elliot Anderson is great for us, Declan Rice is a very unique player.

“We trusted them more than we trusted Kobe. It was hard for him. It was for me.

“He got injured before the France game, so we couldn’t even give him minutes there, which hurt me. Maybe he was more injured than me, but it was my responsibility and it’s my responsibility to reward him for that.”
