England missed out on qualifying for the final of the tri-series ODI after Sri Lanka’s bowlers blasted Pakistan to secure an eight-wicket win in Lahore on Tuesday.
After suffering three defeats in the tournament, Brendon McCullum’s side remained on the brink of elimination and needed Pakistan to win on Tuesday and a win against Sri Lanka in their final round-robin match on Thursday to advance.
Instead, Sri Lanka will now face Pakistan in the final on October 31 after Gary Kirsten’s side, who won the toss and elected to bat, dismissed the hosts for 110 in 25.3 overs – Pakistan’s second-lowest ODI total at home.
Dilshan Madushanka starred, producing career-best ODI figures of five for 34, while Sahan Arachchige took a pair of wickets for 24 as Sri Lanka’s bowlers ran riot.
Kamindu Mendis top scored for Sri Lanka, making an unbeaten 62 off 60 deliveries as his side chased down Pakistan’s total within 18.1 overs.
