Confirming that Heat have an interest Art John Kanchar, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald cites a league source as saying the team has discussed internally whether to offer the free agent wing a contract.
As Jackson details, the Heat have talked to Kanchar’s representatives about sending him to training camp and competing for a roster spot with Myron Gardnerwhose minimum salary is only partially guaranteed at $500,000. Kanchar will reciprocate the Heat’s interest, but could wait for a guaranteed contract offer, Jackson explains.
Jackson suggests the Heat may be willing to offer Kanchar a non-guaranteed deal that will become fully guaranteed if he makes the roster for the opening night, which would be similar to a contract Nick Richards signed with the team. While a source who spoke to the Herald was “very skeptical” of the idea of Kanchar accepting a non-guaranteed offer, the source did not rule out the possibility.
Miami currently has 11 players under guaranteed standard contracts, with a 12th player Pele Larson is a lock to make the regular season roster. Gardner and Richards don’t have fully guaranteed salaries, and the Heat have plenty of cap space for a 15th man under their No. 1 apron, so those back-end roster spots could see some change before the opener. According to Jackson, the idea of leaving the 15th spot open until the trade deadline is “appealing” to the organization.
