September 30: Local media are calling it a “Classic” and tickets are selling out fast. The Concacaf League 1 Group A match between the Dominican Republic and Haiti is shaping up to be one of the games of the round and a crucial event in determining the semifinal spots and qualification spots for next year’s Gold Cup.
The two countries share the same island but are separated by language. Spanish is spoken in DR and French in Haiti.
They also share joint leadership of Group A with Curaçao. All three nations have won their first two games; the three nations below have yet to earn a point.
With four group matches in the group stage, the winner of the DR-Haiti clash will be in pole position for progression to the semi-finals.
The game has ignited the imagination of fans who began selling out more than half of the 25,000 capacity Estadio Félix Sánchez in Santo Domingo a day after the second group games, with the Dominican Republic’s federation saying more than 90% of the West Stand was sold out.
By Wednesday morning, fewer than 10,000 tickets were available and the Dominican Republic’s federation urged fans to fill the stadium.
Both teams have been in good recent form. Haiti qualified for the 2026 World Cup, while in 2025 the Dominican Republic pushed Mexico to the limit, losing 3-2 in the Gold Cup opener at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
DR is developing rapidly and has the ambition to regularly challenge the senior nations of Concacaf.
One of those teams will almost certainly reach the semi-finals of Ligue 1, which also guarantees them a place in the quarter-finals of the Nations League in November, when top-seeded teams from the United States, Mexico, Canada and Panama join them.
In their final group games, Haiti plays Costa Rica and RD plays Nicaragua.
But first is the battle for all-island bragging rights.
